KIBERA URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION PROJECT
Photo - Slum upgradingAn agreement between Nairobi City Council and three donors (French Development Agency, Department for International Development –UK and the World Bank for community infrastructure) was reached in 1999 to develop the Kibera Urban Environmental Sanitation Project.
A contract for consultancy services was awarded to a joint venture including Seureca, BURGEAP and Runji & Partners Ltd. It encompassed studies and services for identification, preparation and implementation of the trunk infrastructure, under AFD funding. The Master Plan for trunk infrastructure prepared by the consultancy identified priorities for the community as Access roads including street lighting, Water supply and Environmental Sanitation (run-off drainage,  waste water, excreta and solid waste management)

Laying of 50mm GI pipe at L area A 2Mathare 4A Development Program was an undertaking of the Government of Kenya (GOK) and the Development Co-operation of the Federal Republic of Germany, through the German Development Bank, KfW. The Implementing Agency for the project was the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi through Amani Housing Trust, AHT.
In April 2004, AHT commissioned Runji and Partners Consulting Engineers Ltd to provide consultancy services for rehabilitation and completion of the project. The project aimed at improving the living conditions of the 20,000 or so people living in the slum. The project components were water supply, sewerage, wetcores, stormwater drainage, garbage collection points, roads and footpaths, street lighting, cliff protection, river training works and relocation of houses.
The following services were rendered by the consultant:
  • Rapid assessment of the wetcores (water and Sanitation), the infrastructure and community centre, in order to give a quick overview of the project status.
  • Detailed execution of the condition survey.
  • Compilation of bid documents for rehabilitation of the works
  • Invitation to tenders and recommendations thereof and
  • Project supervision.
