NORTHERN CORRIDOR REHABILITATION PROGRAMME Picture4

Co-funded by the European Union through European Development Fund (EDF) and Government of Kenya through Development Vote, the main objective of the on-going rehabilitation works is to improve the Northern Corridor up to a level of service required and compatible with the economic potential of the country.
Hydroarch Srl Consulting Engineering, Italy in association with Runji & Partners Consulting Engineers are the supervising consultants for the two lots comprising the programme.
Lot 1: Rehabilitation of Eldoret–Turbo-Webuye Road (A104): The road project is situated in Uasin Gishu, Kakamega and Bungoma Counties. It starts at Maili Nne Market (approx. 6km from Eldoret Town) and runs westwards along the existing Road A104 through Turbo Town and ends at Webuye Township. The total road length is approximately 59Km.
Lot 2: Rehabilitation of Webuye- Malaba Road (A104):The approximately 62 km-long project road starts at Webuye first junction RHS coming from Eldoret and ends at Malaba. The Webuye - Malaba Road being part of the A104 road is an integral section of the Northern Corridor and as such it is a major transit route for traffic to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Southern Sudan.
At design stage (2006 – 2007), Runji & Partners were part of joint venture subcontracted to conduct a complete Formulation Study covering the two lots including;
  • the full detailed technical investigations,
  • surveys and analysis of the existing condition,
  • capacity and residual strength of the pavement and structures;
  • the past and existing traffic,
  • axle loading characteristics and traffic growth projections;
  • then proposed optimum rehabilitation/ methods of strengthening and periodic maintenance, leading to production of Tender documents for the Works Contract and assistance with Procurement of the Works Contract.

CONSULTANCY SERVICES FOR SUPERVISION OF CONSTRUCTION OF NDORI-NGIYA ROAD (C28)

ndoriThe works were located along the existing Ndori – Nyang’oma – Ngi’ya Road (C28) which traverses the County of Siaya, formerly comprised of the districts of Rarieda, Bondo and Siaya of Nyanza province.

The project road starts at Ndori market at the junction with road C27 (Kisian - Bondo Road) and runs in a northerly direction through Nyang’oma market to end at Ng’iya at the junction with Road C29 (Luanda – Siaya Road). The length of this road is approximately 17.5 km. A further 3No. spur roads at the centres of Abom and Nyang’oma totalling approximately 2.5km in length were constructed under the contract.

The works involved construction to bitumen standard of the project roads, junctions and a reinforced concrete bridge to cross River Yala.

The consultant provided all the supervision services during the construction period from August 2010 to June 2013 and during DLP that ended in May 2015.

PRELIMINARY AND DETAILED ENGINEERING DESIGN OF UPPER HILL ROADS NETWORK

upperhillFeasibility Study, Preliminary and Detailed Engineering Design for the improvement of a selection of Upper Hill Roads ( Bunyala Road, Upper Hill Road, Lower Hill Road, Kilimanjaro Road, Kenya Road, chyulu Road, Mara Road, Hospital Road, Elgon Road, Kiambere Road, Masaba Road, Karuri Gakure, Ole Sangale Road, Mawenzi road including three missing links between Masaba and Ole sangale, Kiambere and Mawenzi Rd) in Nairobi City.

The cumulative length of the roads is approximately 13Km.

DESIGN REVIEW AND CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION FOR IMPROVEMENT OF UPPERHILL ROADS NETWORK IN NAIROBI COUNTY - PHASE 1

Picture - DBM laying along Hospital Km 0+700 RHSAfter undertaking the Preliminary design, the consultant was commissioned to carry out design review and construction supervision of rehabilitation and upgrading of Upper Hill Roads (Phase I).

The rehabilitation and upgrading of Phase 1 consists of the removal of the existing 2 lane bituminous road and widening the same to dual carriageway with a median separator, cycle tracks, footpaths, reinforced concrete side drains and street lighting of Elgon Road, Kilimanjaro Road, Parts of Hospital Road, Parts of Mara Road, Parts of Upper Hill Road, Parts of Lower Hill Road and Parts of Bunyala Roads totalling approximately 5.0 km in length.

The consultant is providing all the supervision services.

PRELIMINARY AND DETAILED DESIGN FOR THE REHABILITATION OF THE NAKURU-NYAHURURU-NYERI-MARUA ROAD (B5)

NAKURU-NYAHURURU-NYERI-MARUA ROAD

Runji and Partners  is a consulting partner in providing Consultancy Services for the Feasibility and Detailed Design including EIA, SIA, RAP and the preparation of the Tender Documents.

The Project Road which is 171km, links the Nairobi-Ethiopia Highway (A2) at Marua to the Nairobi-Uganda Highway (A8) at Nakuru and is thus an important link in the Road Transport Network of Kenya.

PRELIMINARY AND DETAILED ENGINEERING DESIGN OF RUMURUTI –MARALAL (C77) ROAD

Rmrt-MrlUnder this contract, the consultancy services entailed A Feasibility Study, Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), Preliminary and Detailed Engineering Design and Preparation of Tender Documents for the construction to bitumen standard of the Rumuruti –Maralal (C77) road, a gravel/earth road. The total length of the Road under review was approximately 110Km.

DESIGN REVIEW FOR MERILLE- RIVER MARSABIT ROAD (A2)

Picture - Merille RiverThe Merille River - Marsabit road is a 122km road located in northern Kenya. As a partner in the consultancy, the consultant carried out review of the available detailed engineering design reports, including;

  • Field investigations,
  • The EIA and EMP in fulfilling the requirements of the current Environmental regulations.
  • A rapid economic analysis of the project based on data presented in the design reports and cost estimation, to derive NPV, EIRR using vehicle operating costs and time savings, maintenance etc and recommendations.

Necessary modifications of significant nature impacting on the cost estimate, tender dossier and drawings were made..

PRELIMINARY AND DETAILED DESIGN FOR THE UPGRADING OF VOI – MWATATE - TAVETA (A23) ROAD 

River Voi (Km 10+00)Preliminary and Detailed Design for upgrading the 110 km road to bitumen standard. The project road starts at the junction with A109 road at Voi town and ends at Holili Border of Kenya and Tanzania and is one of the Trunk Roads in Kenya.

  • Drainage design, structural and hydrological surveys;

PRELIMINARY AND DETAILED DESIGN FOR THE UPGRADING OF OF MWINGI – THUCHI RIVER (C93) ROAD

The scope entailed;Topographical surveys, Traffic surveys, Gotechnical investigations, Road inventory, Drainage design, structural and hydrological surveys, Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, Pavement design, geometric design, detailed design and preparation of tender documents
